Standard Visiblity (Meteorological Range)

Standard Visibility (a.k.a. Meteorological Range, with ε = .05) field at the surface is shown with an overlay of wind barbs. Standard Visibility is solely a function of the extinction coefficient. Magenta is the clearest air. Large values (20-300km) are typically from aerosols. Medium values (2-20km) generally represent precipitation. Low values (2km) represent fog, or conversely where the mountains poke up into the clouds. Aerosol valuse also reflect the clearer air usually found at higher elevations. Thus the complex variety of Colorado weather is shown in one view. Compare with these PM2.5 measurements.
